Poetry Friday: Enslaved in English Lit (original)

A few folks this week are digging out poems from their past--some from their high school selves. I wrote some poetry in high school, I won't lie, but this little "gem" comes from one of my early (very early) college semesters. It is called "Enslaved in English Lit." And yes, it was written BEFORE I changed my major to English. (For those thinking I might be anti-English lit, know that I got a bachelor's and master's degree in it.)

Enslaved in English Lit
by Becky Laney (circa 1996-7)

My eyes are full of pain,
As her words go down the drain.
No one listens.
No one cares.
Everyone wants out of here.
If only the end time was near!

So I doodle,
and I draw.
But still no end in sight.
(And I got NO sleep last night.)

So I daydream,
And I stare
At the words with no meaning.
Towards the door we all are leaning
With a glazed look
in our eyes.

The words I yearn to shout?
Yes, you guessed it, "I WANT OUT!!!"
So my eyes are full of pain
As her words go down the drain.
No one listens.
No one cares.
Everyone wants out of here.
But the end time is not near.

Poetry Friday roundup is at Mentor Texts.

I think the teacher must have wanted OUT, too. :) Thanks for being bold and digging back into the past with me. It's been fun seeing what everyone finds.
